Regarding the regulation of one “charger”, the US wants to follow Europe

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Senators from the United States Democratic Party called on the United States to follow the European Union’s regulation on one charger for various mobile devices.

In a letter to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Senators Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders asked the department to set up a regulation on one common charging device for all phones.

“The European Union is wisely acting in the public interest by confronting technology companies on consumer and environmental concerns. The United States should do the same,” the senators said, quoted by The Verge, Sunday.

Senators argue that chargers from different brands of cell phones cause electronic waste and a financial burden for consumers who switch phones or own devices with different brands.

“Year after year, Americans pile up old chargers in landfills while we pay tech companies more money for new chargers,” Markey told The Verge.

The senator asked the US Department of Commerce to follow the European Union by issuing a one-charger rule to “save money, sanity and planet earth”.

Unlike the European Union, senators are not asking for USB-C as a charging standard, but rather, a “comprehensive strategy” so they can develop their own standard.

The European Union some time ago implemented a “charger” regulation with USB-C. With this regulation, USB-C becomes the charging standard for various electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets.
