Reduce the Risk of Fatty Liver Disease by Walking, Just 22 Minutes a Day!

Fatty liver disease does not cause symptoms at first.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Fatty liver or fatty liver refers to a variety of conditions caused by fatty deposits in the liver. While it generally doesn’t cause problems in its early stages, it can lead to liver failure and even cancer if left untreated.

One of the main causes fatty liver disease are overweight or obese, especially if you have a lot of fat around your waist. Therefore, to lower the risk of fatty liver, experts recommend that people maintain a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly.

A study has revealed the exact duration sport needed to reduce risk fatty liver. A meta-analysis of existing research suggests that 150 minutes of exercise during the week or less than 22 minutes a day is optimal.

Papers published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology it used 14 studies focused on exercise interventions involving 551 participants with fatty liver. Researchers from US universities evaluated data such as age, sex, body mass index, changes in body weight, adherence to exercise protocols, and levels of liver fat as measured by MRI.

To be considered a clinically significant impact, there must be a 30 percent reduction in liver fat as measured by MRI. Through this, researchers found that exercise was shown to be 3.5 times more likely to reduce risk compared to conventional treatment methods.

The team then determined the best exercise dose. They found that 39 percent of patients who achieved or exceeded 150 minutes of brisk walking a week reached the healthy liver threshold.

Only 26 percent of those who exercised for less than 150 minutes reached this threshold. These findings support the amount of exercise recommended by the American Gastroenterological Association, European Association for the Study of the Liver, and the National Health Service (NHS) in England.

Jonathan Stine, study author and professor at Penn State Health Milton S Hershey Medical Center in the US, explained that this study could give doctors the confidence to prescribe exercise as a treatment for fatty liver.

“Having a target amount of physical activity to do will be useful for health and sports professionals to develop a personalized approach as they help patients modify their lifestyle and become more physically active,” Stine said. ExpressMonday (13/2/2023).

Stine reminds that exercise is a lifestyle modification. Exercise may be suitable as a form of therapy.

Stine also asked doctors to recommend the amount of physical activity in patients with fatty liver. Brisk walking or light cycling for half an hour a day five times a week is one example of a program that meets this criterion.
