Redesigned desktop hard drive with SATA connection and SMR technology

The new Toshiba P300 has been developed as a simple memory upgrade for all desktop PCs in the computing, gaming and storage sectors.

-What is special about Toshiba’s P300 is the use of SMR technology (Shingled Magnetic Recording) and the extended buffer memory. Information can be written in an overlapping manner on the magnetic disks using SMR technology, which enables higher data density with less material use. While each track has to be separated by a small distance with CMR technology, this is not the case with SMR technology. Thanks to the cache system used, the problem of random re-writing should also be largely resolved in the P300.

The Toshiba T300 has a 256 megabyte buffer cache and achieves a maximum data transfer speed of 210 MB/s. According to the manufacturer, the data transfer speed can be increased by up to 19 percent compared to the previous P300 desktop HDDs. The previous versions of the P300 hard disk, on the other hand, had to make do with 64 or 128 megabytes of cache as a buffer.

However, the manufacturer has not yet revealed what is actually the most interesting information about the new Toshiba P300, with two terabytes of data storage. The price of the new HDD should not be announced until the final release in the third quarter of 2022. The standard variant of the P300 has been listed in the price comparison since 2015 and is currently changing hands for around 52 euros.
