One internet user imagined what a “Red Dead Redemption” movie would look like if Rockstar’s video game was adapted. A fake trailer gives us a glimpse of putting Kit Harington in the lead role. The illusion works and we almost believe it!
The western sublimated on consoles in Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar has nothing more to prove in the field of open world games. In parallel with GTAs, the American studio is interested in the world of cowboys with Red Dead Revolver. The slap will come in 2010 when comes out Red Dead Redemption. A very great game which will have an even more ambitious sequel. This second episode, which extends the story of the previous one by taking place years before, is one of the best games of this generation of consoles. Stuffed with references to the cinema, these titles immerse the player in a perfectly reconstituted atmosphere. Everyone is then free to forge their own personalized experience by following the main framework.
What would a movie adapted from the games look like?
An interesting question that puzzles Rob Long. The videographer on YouTube under the pseudonym Smasher just published a fake trailer that places Kit Harington in the costume of John Marston (the hero of the first Red Dead Redemption).
The result works well, let’s be frank about it. To achieve the illusion of a real movie, Smasher took over shots of the film Brimstone in which Kit Harington plays. This is surely why the actor finds himself in the lead role, even if we think that maybe it would be better for someone else. Someone a little more brutal, at the Hugh Jackman for example. We’ll let everyone make up their own mind.
As for the question of knowing if this adaptation would make sense, one can frankly doubt it. The games are so influenced by what has been done in the cinema – in classics but also less known works – that making an adaptation would not be of real use. But it would not be the first time that Hollywood would seize a video game license without having a coherent project behind. Rockstar already puts a lot of staging in its games so you might as well enjoy the experience as such rather than suffering another setback in dark rooms.
