Recover deleted files in Windows 10? Microsoft releases an official tool

Microsoft has released a tool for the recovery of deleted files. There are many different solutions, some free and some paid, for the recovery of deleted files: from today Windows 10 has an official tool which allows you to restore these files, free download from the Microsoft Store.

Windows File Recovery, this is the name of Microsoft’s tool for restoring deleted files, will allow you to recover from hard disk, SSD, USB memory and even SD cards all those files that have been deleted (intentionally or by mistake) and that have not yet been overwritten. The utility also allows you to restore even corrupt files, providing users with a new lifeline in moments of absolute despair (if you have never lost or corrupted important files you cannot understand, Editor’s note).

The Microsoft tool can work by setting the name, a keyword, a path or a particular file extension to be restored as a search target. File formats are supported JPEG, PDF, PNG, MPEG, MP3, MP4, ZIP, i file Office and many others while supported file systems are NTFS, FAT, exFAT e ReFS. To use the tool you need to have Windows 10 19041.0 or higher and the supported hardware platforms are ARM, ARM64, x64 e x86.

The application supports three recovery modes: the default mode, the segment mode and the signature mode. Accidentally deleted files from a USB drive can be recovered using signature mode, which can go beyond the classic NTFS recovery mode to work with external storage devices. Signature mode only requires the presence of data and searches for specific file types, but does not work for small files. The default mode uses the Master File Table (MFT) to locate lost files. Segment mode does not require MFT, but requires the presence of segments on the drive from which to retrieve data.

Unfortunately, unlike other similar programs available online, Windows File Recovery should be used via command line (CMD) and is therefore suitable for a group of more experienced users. The official guide to using this very useful tool can be viewed on the Microsoft support site, while you can download Windows File Recovery from Microsoft Store.

Have you ever found yourself in a position to recover deleted files? What do you think of this Microsoft tool?
