From 22 December to 28 December, an average of 935,000 new cases of Covid-19 were reported per day. This is more than ever during the pandemic since the release of Covid-19 in late 2019, AFP reports, according to official national data.
The number of deaths has decreased
As AFP explains, a large proportion of less serious or asymptomatic cases remain undetected, despite the fact that intensified inspections have been carried out in many countries since the beginning of the pandemic. In addition, testing policies vary from country to country.
The increase in the number of reported infections so far has not contributed to the increase in the number of deaths caused by Covid-19 in the world, it has even decreased in the last three weeks, reports AFP.
In the last seven days, the world average has registered around 6,450 new deaths a day, the lowest level since the end of October 2020. At the peak of the pandemic from 20 to 26 January 2021, 14,800 deaths were recorded every day.
Preliminary data suggest that the omicron strain of Covid-19 virus is up to 70% less likely to be hospitalized than the Covid-19 delta variant. However, the World Health Organization warns that the stickiness of the omicron variant and the high rates of infection could lead to congestion in hospitals.
The number of infected is growing rapidly
The French parliament on Wednesday began considering a new law that will require people to present a vaccination certificate for access to restaurants, cinemas, museums and other public places. This will mean that unvaccinated people will no longer be able to use a negative Covid-19 test to enter areas where Covid-19 certification is currently required.
