The number of journalists incarcerated rose by 20 percent this year, reports the international organization that works for press freedom. The increase was particularly noticeable in countries such as Myanmar, Belarus and Hong Kong. In addition, never before have so many female journalists been imprisoned as in 2021. 60 female journalists have been imprisoned, a third more than last year.
Most journalists are imprisoned in China (127), followed by Myanmar (53), Vietnam (43) and Belarus (32).
A special tribunal was set up in The Hague last month for murders of journalists. The so-called People’s Tribunal for the murder of journalists wants to hold governments to account that have done too little to convict the perpetrators.
