Record-High US Pork Exports in 2023, Beef Exports Face Challenges

The USMEF has just made public its data on the evolution of US pork and beef exports for 2023. The pork data points to sales of 2.91 million tons, which represented 8% more than in 2022 and the third highest figure ever achieved. Regarding the value of exports, the 8.16 billion dollars obtained are a record due to the good performance of international pork prices and the increase in the quantity exported.

Pork exports set annual volume and value records in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Malaysia, as well as value records in Central America and Colombia. Exports to South Korea were the third largest on record and second in value, while shipments to Oceania were the largest since 2020.

“2023 saw tremendous growth in global demand for U.S. pork, and it came at a time when the U.S. industry needed it most,” said USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom. “The expansion of the presence of American pork in Mexico has been notable, but the great news certainly does not end there. “We are very encouraged by the strong demand we have seen across the Western Hemisphere and also in several Asia-Pacific markets.”

As for beef, in all of 2023 the US managed to export 1.29 million tons, 12% less than in 2022. The value of what was exported also decreased, by 15% and remained at 10,000 millions of dollars. Despite that, it was the third highest value ever recorded according to USMEF.

Mexico’s demand for U.S. beef continued to strengthen in December, bringing 2023 exports to the highest volume since 2019 and the value of exports to $1.19 billion, the second highest on record. Beef exports to Central America and the Dominican Republic reached record levels in 2023, while shipments also increased to Hong Kong, Africa and Peru.

“There is no doubt that 2023 was a challenging year for US beef exports, especially in our largest Asian markets, where economic conditions have weighed on demand from the foodservice channel,” Halstrom said. “Of course, we also face challenges on the supply side, with less product available for export. However, U.S. beef achieved excellent growth in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and we are encouraged by the rebound in demand in December in South Korea and China. “It was also great to see such a strong per capita export value in December, exceeding $430.”
