The drugs were confiscated on July 13, and this is the largest quantity of drugs ever seized in the country, the prosecutor’s office announced on Thursday.
The drugs, with an estimated value of 600 million euros, were hidden in a container of bananas that had arrived in Rotterdam via Panama, the prosecutor’s office said.
“A total of 8,064 one-kilogram packages of cocaine were seized from twelve pallets of bananas,” revealed the prosecutor’s office.
The seizure was not previously announced as the investigation continued. According to prosecutors, the seized drugs have now been destroyed.
Dutch customs seized more than 29,702 kilograms of drugs in the first half of 2023, up from 22,009 kilograms in the same period last year, according to data released last month.
More than half of the detected shipments contained less than 100 kilograms of drugs.
