Pneumonia is the second largest cause of death in children under five in Indonesia. Symptoms of pneumonia in children are often difficult to distinguish from other minor respiratory diseases such as colds and colds (common cold).

This leaves many children with pneumonia not getting the care they deserve and has a fatal impact on their health.

Pneumonia is an acute inflammatory disease of the lungs that makes the lungs fill with fluid and inflammatory cells. This condition can lead to serious health complications and sometimes death.

1. Continuous Cough and Fever

Early symptoms of pneumonia are symptoms that resemble a common cold such as cough, runny nose and fever accompanied by prolonged weakness and lethargy.

Symptoms of pneumonia usually last relatively longer than symptoms of colds and coughs from the common cold.

2. Difficulty breathing

Children who have pneumonia often have difficulty breathing, marked by:

– The respiratory rate is faster

– Breath nostrils

– Pull the chest and abdomen walls

– Blushing lips and nails due to lack of oxygen in the blood.

Difficulty breathing in babies is easier to detect when doing activities or eating. Babies who have difficulty breathing will prioritize their body’s breathing mechanisms so they will eat less, be restless, fussy, or look uncomfortable.

Nastiti said there are several risk factors for children developing pneumonia, among them.

– Born prematurely

– Weight loss

– Malnutrition

– Malnutrition

– Incomplete immunization

– No exclusive breastfeeding

– Vitamin deficiency

– Are exposed to cigarette smoke pollution

Nastiti advised to see a doctor immediately if in doubt about the symptoms of pneumonia in children.

“If the fever does not go down for two or three days and is followed by faster breathing or shortness of breath, then immediately take it to the hospital,” said Nastiti.
