Reasons for Heart Disease Patients Should Not Be Injected with the Covid-19 Vaccine

TEMPO.CO, JakartaCovid-19 Vaccine cannot be given carelessly to people with cardiovascular disease, such as heart failure, coronary heart disease, and hypertension. According to the recommendation of the Central Executive of the Indonesian Cardiovascular Specialist Association (PP Perki), until now there is no data that is strong enough regarding the safety of vaccines in groups with cardiovascular disease.

“Cardiovascular diseases that are still symptomatic of instability in the last three months are considered not to be given the Covid-19 vaccine until safety data are available in clinical trials,” wrote the Chairman of PP Perki, Isman Firdaus.

In line with unstable cardiovascular disease, namely shortness of breath, angina (pain / discomfort around the chest), fatigue, limited activity, palpitations, swollen legs, and decreased consciousness.

However, stable or asymptomatic chronic heart failure disease within three months is eligible for Covid-19 vaccination. Likewise hypertension without symptoms with controlled or stable blood pressure (less than 140/90 mmHg), including people with coronary heart disease who have undergone a complete revascularization process without symptoms within three months.

“It is worth considering for vaccination,” wrote the PP Perki statement.

Specialist heart disease Vito Anggarino Damay said that in theory the vaccine is safe for patients with stable chronic heart disease. In fact, the influenza vaccine in Europe is given to sufferers of chronic heart disease to avoid the possibility of flu that can trigger heart failure or acute heart conditions.

“If the vaccine does not cause systemic disturbances in the body, it should be fine, but of course everything must be proven by scientific principles,” he said.

If it can be given, cardiovascular sufferers need to meet a number of requirements, such as a good heart condition, a history of regular treatment, and control of the disease. Then, blood sugar is well controlled, blood pressure is also controlled, so that there is no infection or serious acute illness.

“Therefore, it is important to continue taking medication in people with heart disease. The drug is a way to stabilize the work of the heart,” he said.

He admitted, many patients sometimes felt that medicine was a burden. In fact, medicine is part of the effort to care for the body.

“With the help of drugs, some people with heart problems can still work as usual,” explained Vito.
