Real Madrid Coach Carlo Ancelotti Faces Tax Fraud Charges: What You Need to Know

Spanish prosecutors have charged Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti with alleged tax fraud. He claims he used shell companies to hide some of his income during his first stint at the club a decade ago. The Italian coach faces four years and nine months in prison. Informs o tom server AP News.

Ancelotti was alleged to have embezzled a million euros in 2014 and 2015 by declaring only the income he received from Real Madrid, while omitting income from image rights. According to prosecutors, he created a “confusing” system of shell companies to hide his additional income.

The Italian coach is said to have used companies “lacking any real activity” based outside Spain. “Neither he nor the mentioned companies had to pay taxes on the large sums earned in Spain or outside our country,” prosecutors said.

Sixty-four-year-old Ancelotti coached Madrid in 2013-2015 and returned to the club in 2021. He is among the most successful football coaches: He is the only one to have won the Champions League four times – twice with Real Madrid and twice with AC Milan.

He is also the latest in a string of high-profile football figures to be targeted by Spanish authorities for unpaid taxes, although none have been jailed so far. Former Madrid coach José Mourinho received a one-year suspended sentence in 2019 after pleading guilty to tax fraud. Spanish prosecutors have also dealt with tax evasion in the past Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. Like Ancelotti, they have been accused of using shell companies outside of Spain to hide income from image rights.
