Real Madrid: A year of the new Bernabéu

The works to build the new Santiago Bernabéu are one year old. In 2019, during the week of May 20-27 (after Madrid played their last league game on May 19) they began working on the reform. Although we had to wait one more month, until June 24, to be able to accelerate, since when LaLiga ended there were still two games to play in the white stadium: Spain-Sweden (June 10) and the Corazon Classic Match (June 23).

During this year, the progress has been considerable. And it will be even more so in the coming months, when Madrid will play behind closed doors at Di Stéfano in Valdebebas. That will speed up the works (and save money), since Madrid had to stop everything every time a match was played and adapt the stadium to comply with the established security measures. In recent weeks, on the other hand, he has been able to accelerate the works without thinking about those stops required by the meetings.

The change begins to be noticed on the outside … and on the inside, where the blue seats have begun to be raised within the plan for the reform and modernization of the stadium. That interior work was scheduled to begin when the official season ended at the Bernabéu (Sunday, May 17), but the coronavirus stop allowed it to start earlier.

Among all the problems that the coronavirus crisis is creating, in terms of stadium reform, the deadlines may be shortened. In principle, it is difficult to play games with the public until at least 2021. Madrid would continue in Valdebebas. That could lead to the goal of having the new stadium ready, which will become one of the most modern on the planet, in early 2022.

In addition, as ABC has published, the Bernabéu cover could already be in place in September, when the summer ends. That during all this time Madrid will not have stoppages in construction will speed up, and much, the work …
