Even though it was initially doubtful that it would launch this year, the Raspberry Pi 5 was finally released. This microcomputer appears with faster specifications, but also a more expensive price.
The Raspberry Pi 5 is the first Raspberry Pi to come with a special chip made for them. The brain is a quad core 64 bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor operating at 2.4GHz, about 2-3 times faster than the Raspberry Pi 4 released four years ago.
The processor is paired with an 800MHz VideoCore VII graphics chip, which, according to the Raspberry Pi Foundation, has a significant performance increase over its predecessor.
Oh yes, the Raspberry Pi 5 is equipped with a southbridge chip designed by the Rapsberry Pi Foundation. This chip, which was first found in the Raspberry Pi, functions as a bridge between the chipset and the devices connected to this microcomputer.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation claims that with the presence of the RP1 southbridge, the performance and functionality of the Raspberry Pi 5 will increase greatly, such as higher transfer speeds to external storage devices or other accessories.
This southbridge also allows the Raspberry Pi 5 to be connected to two cameras or two displays at once, via a 1.5Gbps MIPI transceiver. There is also one PCI Express 2.0 lane — also for the first time — which can be used for peripherals that require large bandwidth.
Regarding ports, there are two HDMI that support 4K 60p and HDR, a microSD slot, two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, gigabit ethernet, and a 5V DC power connection via USB-C. There is also support for Bluetooth 5.0 and Bluetooth Low Energy, as well as high speed mode for SD cards.
The Raspberry Pi 5 comes in several RAM options, namely the 4GB version priced at USD 60 and the 8GB RAM version priced at USD 80. This price is slightly more expensive than the Raspberry Pi 4 which costs USD 55 for the 4GB version, and USD 75 for the 8GB. Sales will start at the end of October.
