Rare Infection in England: Man Bitten by Stray Cat Suffers Swelling and Infection

A man’s hand in England became infected after being bitten by a stray cat.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — A man in England suffered from a rare infection caused by bacteria after he was bitten by a cat. The 48-year-old man was rushed to the emergency department in Cambridge after his hand started to swell.

The unnamed male patient bitten by a cat wild eight hours earlier. There were multiple cuts and teeth marks around his wrists.

Doctor Nick Jones, of Cambridge University Hospitals, warns that cats are a major reservoir of zoonotic infections. Their long, sharp teeth predispose to deep tissue bite injuries.

“When bitten by a cat, the saliva will provide a high risk for secondary infection,” said Jones, quoted from The SunTuesday (8/8/2023).

The male patient was finally sent home after being given a tetanus injection and his wound was cleaned and bandaged. It’s just that, the next day he came back after his arms turned red and started to swell along with his fingers that were getting bigger.

Doctors used a medical knife to remove damaged tissue around his wound and gave him three types of antibiotics. The man was then provided with more drugs.

The good news is that he is recovering. However, medics at the hospital said they were confused and began analyzing his tissue to look further into the cause of the surprising symptoms.

They found the infection was caused by bacteria similar to streptococcus. The bacteria usually causes infections such as meningitis, strep throat, bacterial pneumonia and pink eye.
