Rare etching Rembrandt turns out to be worth 30,000 euros, work hung under stairs for years

Owner Ied van der Mersch told recently in Jinek that she had obtained the work from her father’s inheritance. She actually didn’t think it was very special and even labeled the list as ‘ugly’.

Contrary to her father, Van der Mersch did not believe it was a real Rembrandt. “But still, I hung it up. Under the stairs.”

After ten years under the stairs, Van der Mersch took the work with him to Tussen Kunst & Kitsch in September. There she discovered to her own surprise that it was indeed an authentic work by the Dutch master. She says she does not want to sell her Rembrandt.

For art connoisseur Bas Hesselink, there is no doubt about the authenticity of the work. “From the paper, the watermark and comparison with reproductions, I am sure it is a rare Rembrandt,” he previously told RTL Nieuws.
