Range on winter lead: – No one kept what they promised

Last week, NAF and Motor conducted this year’s winter test of electric cars.

31 cars were ready for the race from Vulkan in Oslo and up Gudbrandsdalen and over Venabygdfjellet.

None of the electric cars complied with the WLTP range stated by the manufacturers, the organization reports in a press release. All 31 models in the large range test had a deviation from the stated range of more than 10 percent. Many of the new popular family cars rolled between 10 and 15 percent shorter than promised, even with moderate winter temperatures.

The test was carried out on what is described as a normal winter day for large parts of the country, with temperatures between 0 and 10 degrees and dry roads.

Chinese BYD Tang delivered relatively best, with only 11 percent deviation from the promised 400 kilometers (it went 356 km).

The Tesla Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor covered 521 kilometers and was the car that drove the longest. It had stated a range of 614 kilometers. This corresponds to a range loss of about 15 percent.

Disappointed

At the other end of the scale, we find the Skoda Enyaq iV80.

– It achieved a startlingly bad result, says public contact in NAF, Thor Egil Braadland to DinSide.

It had stated a range of 509 kilometers, but it said stop after 347 kilometers. This gives a deviation of as much as 31.83 percent.

The result was so bad that a new test round was run. This one ended up with almost the same result.

Now the importer is working to find out the cause.

– Such tests are affected by a number of external conditions, and it is immediately difficult to say why this model got a different result in the test than other models built on the same technical platform. The result in the NAF and Motors test does not correspond to our own experiences or other tests carried out in other contexts. We will explore this further, to see what may be the explanation here, writes communications manager at Skoda, Christine Eiker Winther in an email to DinSide.

The phase

An interesting aspect Braadland points out is that several of the cars managed over 50 miles before it was stopped.

– Many owners of petrol and diesel cars state that this is what it takes for them to purchase an electric car, he says.

He calls it a “new phase” that cars with such a good winter range are now starting to enter the market.
