Raising Awareness and Taking Action: The Urgency of Sepsis and the Call for an Action Plan

Sepsis, or colloquially blood poisoning, is a condition that is little known. Yet it affects between 47 and 50 million people worldwide every year, of whom at least 11 million die. This means a death every 2.8 seconds. In yesterday’s Pano broadcast we heard and saw testimonies from victims and the call from experts to quickly draw up an action plan. Member of Parliament Robby De Caluwé agrees with that call. What’s more: he already submitted a resolution about it 2.5 years ago in which he calls on Minister Vandenbroucke to take action. He repeated his question again during Question Time in Parliament: “In a number of our neighboring countries, action plans have been drawn up to make sepsis better known to the general public and to raise awareness. In addition, the focus is on a multidisciplinary approach and further training for doctors and nurses. Our country is lagging behind for the time being and I deeply regret that. The testimonies of people affected by sepsis cut through the marrow and bone.

Sepsis is unknown to the general public but is certainly dangerous. The most common and lasting complaints that people suffer from sepsis are: fatigue, muscle weakness, concentration and memory problems, nerve pain throughout the body, joint pain, little appetite, poor resistance, mental complaints such as a stress disorder, reduced kidney function, increased risk cardiovascular disease and of course an increased risk of death.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that countries draw up action plans. De Caluwé finds it unacceptable that Minister Vandenbroucke is delaying this in our country: “I call on the minister to take action and bring together the various actors involved to arrive at a broadly supported action plan. That is our political and social duty!”
