Railway Construction Sites in Rhine-Main Area: Commuter Frustration and Criticism from Pro Bahn Association

Two large railway construction sites are currently demanding a lot of patience from commuters in the Rhine-Main area. Sharp criticism of the alternative transport organized because of the blocked routes comes from the Pro Bahn passenger association.

The chairman of the Hessian state association, Thomas Kraft, reports on late trains and frustrated customers. The railway line in the north of Frankfurt in the direction of Central Hesse will be closed until April 18th. In addition, the S-Bahn tunnel under Frankfurt City and Offenbach is closed until April 24th.

“We can already see that considerable work has been done. It’s not due to the work on the construction site,” said Kraft of the German Press Agency. The problem is the planning of replacement traffic: According to estimates by the association, around a quarter of the trains are delayed by up to 60 minutes – only every fifth train is on time.

The situation with rail replacement traffic is irresponsible – notices and buses are often insufficiently and misleadingly marked, said Kraft. Pro Bahn also criticizes a sluggish flow of information and calls for personnel consequences, among other things, at the Bahn.

On request, Deutsche Bahn stated that individual trains were canceled and that departure times and platforms were being postponed. However, no traveler is left alone: ”We continuously provide information about our Easter construction sites in the Rhine-Main area on our specially set up press blog.” There is also a detailed overview of timetable changes and replacement services on the Deutsche Bahn website.

“Our previous observations and feedback do not point to more extensive problems with the course of the construction site timetables,” said a spokesman for the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsbund (RMV). There are more subways and trams in Frankfurt. In addition, free minutes would be offered at two bicycle rental systems and employees would be deployed who could provide information.
