Rail Baltica plans to open the railway line in stages from 2026 to 2030 / Article

Driksna explained that the traffic along the entire planned 870-kilometer long railway line will be opened in stages, and not at the same time. This could happen in stages from 2026 to 2030.

Driksna said that one of the first opened sections could be in the Riga-Kaunias part of the line. Meanwhile, in the direction of Estonia, the section from Tallinn to Pärnu, as well as the connection and logistics with the port of Tallinn, will be built at the beginning. Later on, the connection of the line from Pärnu to Riga will take place.

Also, Driksna pointed out that “Rail Baltica” has become more expensive due to inflation will be able to be evaluated next year, because the prices of building materials fluctuate every day, so they should be evaluated on an annual basis. However, until now inflation or lack of materials has not significantly affected the project implementation schedule.

CONTEXT:

The “Rail Baltica” project envisages the creation of a railway line of European standard gauge from Tallinn to the border of Lithuania and Poland, so that it would be possible to connect the Baltic states with other European countries by rail. In the Baltic States, it is planned to build a new, 870-kilometer-long railway line of European gauge (1,435 millimeters) with a maximum train speed of 240 kilometers per hour.

It is expected that “Rail Baltica” costs will reach 5.8 billion euros, including the branch decided to be built between Kaunas and Vilnius. Part of the costs will be covered by the European Union funds. It is planned that the “Rail Baltica” railway line will be ready for traffic in 2026.
