Rai CEO Roberto Sergio Discusses License Fee and Fedez’s Potential Role in Sanremo

The CEO of RAI, Roberto Sergio, took a few pebbles out of his shoes on Rai license feelive on Instagram this morning with Fiorello on “AspettindoVivaRaiDue”.

The host started at dawn with a phone call to Fedeznext guest of Fabio Fazio on Nove after being rejected by Rai, where he should have participated in “Belve” on RaiDue. Jokingly, the rapper anticipated that he would be offered the next artistic direction of Sanremo and that it should be led by a woman, with an allusion to the fact that it could be his wife: Chiara Ferragni.

Sergio’s claim

On this point, Roberto Sergio accepted the joke, pretending not to be aware of the scoop. Later he denied having ever spoken about the 2025 edition of the Festival: «I can say – he added – that Fedez is an extraordinary artistic resource and also in light of our pleasant phone calls, I trust that he will soon reappear on Rai screens».

Then, moving on to the issue of the license fee that the government has lowered from 90 to 70 euros, the CEO said: «Of the 90 euros, and today of the 70 euros, we will take 53. The rest goes to private individuals, newspapers, private televisions …». Between the lines there is a serious claim: the Rai leaders had asked the government to obtain the entire amount of the proceeds of the Rai license fee, including the 110 million that today feed the Publishing Fund. Sergio’s allusion is very subtle and concerns the fact that some newspapers that today advocate for the abolition of the license fee are financed by him through the Fund. That the license fee is a tax that also subsidizes other things, in addition to Rai, “no one knows” Sergio underlined.

Fiorello: «It’s like having the principal in front of you»

“It’s like having the principal in front of you,” Fiorello continued to joke, speaking with the CEO. «Do you want to appeal to viewers not to abandon Rai?» the host asked. «I came here with the minibus to take you to Medjugorie» joked the CEO, taking up a joke from the showman about the low ratings of some new Rai programmes. Program closures in sight? Fiorello pressed: «Waiting for Viva Rai2» Sergio replied, alluding to the fact that today was the last of the warm-up episodes of Fiorello’s show on Instagram and RaiPlay, before returning live on Rai2 from 6 November.

Fabio Fazio on the Nine

The host then returned to Fabio Fazio: «Everyone says that Rai kicked him out but Roberto Sergio is a very good friend of Fazio». «We worked together when I was at Lottomatica» admitted Sergio. Fiorello then provoked the CEO by asking him to wish Fazio to do even more with the ratings of “Che Tempo Che Fa” on the Nove. But Sergio did not accept the invitation: «I can hope that he does a good job but no more!».
“Waiting for Viva Rai2” ends with a positive balance, having reached 800 thousand views, 13% more than the 2022 edition, for a total viewing time on the platform of 130 thousand hours of viewing.

As for more general ratings, the CEO specified that «unlike what is reported daily by some of the press, Rai’s results overall, net of some problems in new programs which require time and also modifications to perform at best, they turned out extraordinarily well. I’m just saying that in the month of October, Rai’s generalist networks excel overall with an average share of 29.7% for the entire day and 31.3% in prime time”. Finally, the CEO clarified that Miss Italia is not on the RAI schedule.
