Rafic Hariri hospital director reports a drop in contamination but calls for caution

The director of Rafic Hariri hospital in Beirut noted on Wednesday that the positivity rate for coronavirus tests recorded the day before was lower than the last days, at less than 10% (with 1,264 positive tests out of a total of 13,987 carried out), however calling on citizens to be careful before the holiday season.

“Yesterday, the positivity rate fell below 10% for the first time in weeks. Whether this is a trend or an exception will depend on the results recorded over the coming days,” wrote Dr Firas Abiad on Twitter. The official, who heads one of the hospitals on the front line in the fight against the pandemic, has repeatedly criticized in recent months about the lack of respect by his fellow citizens of the measures taken to prevent the spread.

He also regretted that calls have been launched for a few days to “lighten” the sanitary measures during the holidays, in indirect allusion to the demands of the tourist and private sector, and in particular of restaurants and bars. “People tend to ignore the long-term results that their actions can have,” namely an increase in Covid-19 contamination, he lamented. Firas Abiad also announced that two employees of the hospital he runs, who had tested positive several months ago, had contracted the virus again.

Since the virus first appeared in Lebanon in February, 148,877 people have contracted the virus, of which 1,223 have died and 104,207 have recovered. Among those currently infected, 990 are hospitalized, including 406 in intensive care.
