Radio studio as a personality. The documentary story “First Studio” / Article / LSM.lv will have its premiere

Did you know that the Latvian Radio building in Dome Square was once built as the Ulmaņlaiku bank? It is possible that the monumentality and spaciousness of the building also influences the excellent acoustics that Radio Studio 1 is proud of. From classical and choral music to the first stage tunes. On Latvian Television a new documentary story about the legendary Latvian Radio 1st studio has been made, where world – class recordings with outstanding musicians have taken place and are still taking place. As the creators of the promise, the film will reveal unknown or forgotten facts about the studio, and through carefully selected archival materials and feedback from contemporary musicians, the present will now meet history. –

The film’s director Zita Kaminska is convinced that the primary is human: “I was more interested in what its walls have seen, now a huge development of music has gone through this studio, imagining that radio is an ideological institution and expressed it on the other floors ziņ” The first studio produced experimental performances, including the group “Remix”, the Radio Choir and other large Radio bands.

Very few historical videos and photographs have survived, they have been found through careful study of ancient images in private albums and public archives. This can also be explained by the fact that radio was once an ideological institution, and neither filming nor photography was allowed there.

“Every shot I found was worth its weight in gold. I found a photo, sent “screens” to Orest – where Ivanov conducts, where its wooden walls! Radio has also made broadcasts about its history, and they did not have such material. The viewers will flash there for a few seconds, but I have been looking for those pictures for a year, it is a golden pearl for me, and the people of Radio themselves are happy, ”admits the director.

Latvian Radio’s 1st studio has not only produced significant domestic recordings, but also internationally renowned artists.

The sound of “Soul Fever” is recorded there, which gained attention in the “Oscar” categories. It had already happened, I hadn’t been able to film it, so today it is history, ”says Zita Kaminska.

Musicologist Orest Silabriedis admits:

“It is clear that the radio studio is a personality in itself; the fact that it is in the Radio House, yes, it is an affiliation, but it is clear that it is something more, it is a very important citadel of our cultural history. ”

Outstanding musicians and their work in the 1st studio of Latvian Radio through the years in the film “The First Studio” by director Zita Kaminska will be shown on the Second Easter, April 5, at 18.45 LTV1.
