Radboudumc opens new building with advanced insulation units

On Friday 27 May, the patients moved from the old center of Dekkerswald, in the woods near Nijmegen, to the buildings on the campus grounds. The new insulation department is the most advanced department in Europe, according to Radboudumc† The building is designed to treat contagious patients with TB or other lung infectious diseases, as well as patients with the life-threatening Ebola or Lassa virus. Patients with monkey pox or corona probably will not come to this department.

Separate building

Nijmegen is one of five locations where patients with extremely contagious viruses are admitted. Until recently, this happened in a closed wing of the hospital, but that was not optimal. In the separate new building, patients can go directly from the ambulance – which can park in the building – to their nursing room and do not have to go through the hospital.

Four special units for highly contagious patients have been set up in the new building – a closed isolation room with separate, closed entrance and exit. The units are also suitable for IC care. It takes a care worker twenty minutes to don the full personal protective equipment. The cooling vests under the clothing are new, because the temperature in the suit can rise enormously. Patients and employees are monitored via a ‘VAR system’ in the building. This allows direct contact between nurse, doctor or patient, without the risk of the virus spreading.

Used materials and basically everything that comes out of the room must be disposed of in special waste bins. These barrels are stored under strict surveillance, because the waste can fall into the wrong hands and be used as a biological weapon.
