First sweets, then statues and now the late western hero John Wayne († 72). The racism debate is being discussed more and more in Hollywood. Democrats last Friday applied to rename an airport named after Wayne in Orange County, California.

The reason: In an earlier interview with the “Playboy” Wayne said he believed in the superiority of the whites. Black people still need to be brought up. Wayne said, “I don’t feel guilty about the fact that these people were slaves five or ten generations ago.”

“My father was not a racist”
John Wayne a racist? His son Ethan Wayne (58) fights back violently. “John Wayne was not a racist,” he wrote in a statement to “TMZ”. It was unfair to judge his father on the basis of a single interview. “Those who knew him knew that he judged everyone as an individual and believed that everyone deserved the same chance,” explains Ethan Wayne.

Wayne Junior receives prominent support. Donald Trump also takes John Wayne under protection. Trump dismissed the political adversary’s move on Twitter as “incredible stupidity”. He describes himself as a “longtime fan” of the Western legend. The California government must now decide whether the airport should simply be called Orange County Airport in the future.

The honor shortly after death
As an actor, Oscar winner Wayne embodied the traditional values of the so-called pioneer era and was known for arch-conservative political positions. The Orange County airport got its name after Wayne’s death in 1979. Three years later, a 2.70-meter statue of John Wayne was also built there. (sda / hac)
