Racing 92 sinks Toulon and melts on Toulouse

The Ile-de-France club, driven by the XXL performance of its cornerstone Antoine Gibert-Teddy Iribaren, is five points behind the leader of Toulouse, winner of Usap (34-13) the day before. Racing are three points clear of their Parisian neighbours, Stade Français, in 3rd.

Unbeaten since mid-October, Ciel et Blancs, who won for the second time in a row in Mayol, earned their second away win of the season after the victory at Brive (43-38) on 29 October.

A week after a strong performance in Paris (17-12), RCT suffered a second consecutive setback at home after losing to Montpellier (16-26). The Toulonnais are ninth in the league, three points off the top 6.

Pierre Mignoni and Franck Azéma’s men never managed to put their game right in this encounter, neither in a sluggish first period, nor in a second dominated by Racing 92.

Led into the break, the Varois saw Iribaren score the first try of the match after the locker room (45th) and finally thought about starting their match thanks to Beka Gigashvili (58th). But Olivier Klemenczak gave his team the advantage back (61st) and Ben Volavola sealed the victory in the heart of a completely disorganized defense (80th).

Racing 92 are full of confidence before progressing to the European Cup with a decisive fixture, at home, against Irish side Leinster on Saturday.

Toulon, for its part, will travel to Parma during the day to face the Zebre and try to recover in the 1st day of the Challenge Cup.
