Quiet and Empty Streets: A Visit to Poděbrady Spa Town on Sunday, September 17

REPORT: We went to Poděbrady three times in one week. Three times at work. Twice on a weekday and the last time on Sunday, September 17. All three days were downright hot, on Sunday the mercury stopped just below the thirties.

So it was quite understandable why so many people were queuing for ice cream. But otherwise? The spa town offered us a rather sad view of empty streets, half-empty gardens, benches without people and a strange silence that we are not very used to.

Local prices in the historic center are not high at all. You can get a high-quality and hearty lunch for 180 crowns, you won’t have to wait long anywhere, the service was kind and attentive in all cases. Specifically, we visited Náš Hostinec, the Cucina restaurant and Cafe Oliver.

These were businesses that could boast a higher number of customers as one of the few. The other places were more or less empty. Whether we’re talking about the pastry shop by the station or the rest of the cafes.

Over the course of a week, the city has practically turned into a silent expanse, where a dog occasionally barks, children run out onto the lawn, and a couple of city policemen can be seen here and there. We therefore calculated that Sunday would be completely different.

Traditional spa

Was not.

Although motorbikes appeared on the square, they did not attract much attention. The pastry shop was full and there was a long queue for ice cream (a scoop cost 40 crowns). However, several nearby businesses could have a maximum of six guests.

An older waitress told us that food is being ordered, but not so much anymore. “People get drinks and eat ice cream, then go to the castle,” she said. When they do eat, it’s usually something spicy.

We also set up shop. It was also open over the weekend. The local saleswoman confirmed that “it’s no big deal”.

If we were to sum it up, we would mention the beautiful environment, well-kept lawn, cleanliness and tranquility. But it was too big. We must not forget the fact that Lázně Poděbrady is the largest provider of spa care in the Central Bohemia region. People have been visiting them since 1908.
