Questioning Ethylene Oxide, ‘Biang Kerok’ Haagen Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream Withdrawn by BPOM

Jakarta

The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) of the Republic of Indonesia has withdrawn the vanilla flavored Haagen Dazs ice cream product circulating in Indonesia. This withdrawal follows the findings of the French authorities last July 7, regarding the content of Ethylene Oxide. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) also immediately recalled the product.

To protect the public, BPOM instructs importers to withdraw from circulation Haagen Dazs products registered in Indonesia. It will also temporarily stop the distribution or sale of other Haagen-Dazs brand ice cream products with a composition containing vanilla flavoring, until the product is confirmed to be safe.

“The POM Agency oversees and ensures the withdrawal and/or temporary cessation of the circulation/sale of products as described in the appendix are carried out in accordance with applicable procedures,” said BPOM RI’s action, announced in its official written statement, quoted Thursday (21/9/2022).

BPOM RI urges that if the public still finds the vanilla flavored Haagen Dazs ice cream product still in circulation, immediately report it to BPOM RI through the HALOBPOM Contact Center or the Consumer Complaints Service Unit (ULPK) of the Balai Besar/Balai/Loka POM throughout Indonesia.

“The POM Agency continuously conducts pre- and post-market monitoring and supervision of the facilities and products in circulation for the protection of public health and ensures that products registered with the POM Agency and circulating in Indonesia are safe for consumption,” said BPOM’s full statement.

4. It’s Been Missing Since Sunday

As per detikcom monitoring Wednesday (20/7/2022) at the Haagen Dazs Bintaro Jaya Xchange Mall store, this product is no longer available. Adi, a local shopkeeper, said the recall of the two vanilla-flavoured ice cream products followed reports of pesticide compounds in the vanilla Haagen Dazs product in Singapore.

He admitted that he did not know anything about the information that BPOM RI had officially withdrawn from all vanilla flavored Haagen Dazs products.

“It has been withdrawn from last Sunday. It seems to be in all stores,” he explained when met by AFP on Wednesday (20/7).

The remaining Haagen Dazs ice cream variants are rum raisin, cookies and cream, strawberry to coffee and various other flavors. No Haagen Dazs vanilla products were found in the KiosK Bintaro XChange Mall store.
