A spokesperson for Asociación Con Ucrania said that the organization was surprised by Letizia’s choice. “At first we thought it was photoshopped, but when we heard that it was really the case, we were very happy. Every expression of support is important to make visible what is going on in our country,” a spokesperson told the Spanish magazine Vanitatis.
The queen wore a so-called ‘vyshyvanka’, a blouse with embroidery. These are made by hand in Ukraine. “It is a tradition that goes back centuries. It is clothing that is worn on special occasions, such as weddings,” explains the spokesperson. “Since the conflict started about eight years ago, these garments have become very popular again, especially among young people. It is a piece of clothing that we identify with as Ukrainians.”
