Quebec Authorizes Seven Million New Taps to Meet Demand for Maple Syrup

To cope with growing demand for maple products and the very low 2023 harvest, seven million new taps have been authorized in Quebec for start-up and expansion projects.

This addition represents an increase in the long-term production capacity of more than 21 million pounds of maple syrup per year, reported the Producteurs et produceres acéricoles du Québec (PPAQ), which manages the world reserve of maple syrup. maple.

This will bring the total number of taps to a potential 62.5 million taps by April 2026, and will increase sales and exports.

“We are very happy to welcome 739 new maple syrup producers into our big family, in addition to allowing 1,871 businesses to grow by adding taps to their maple grove,” declared PPAQ president Luc Goulet.

“All together, we will try to achieve our goal of replenishing the reserve within five years, while continuing to meet the demand for maple syrup, here and in more than 70 countries,” he said. added.

The issuance of new taps by the PPAQ results from a decision by their board of directors, in particular due to the low harvest of 2023.

Total production of maple products in Quebec amounted to 9.4 million gallons in 2023, down 41.3% compared to 2022, according to Statistics Canada data. This is its lowest level since 2018, notably due to the ice storm that occurred at the end of spring.
