The Skyliners face a Mission Impossible. Frankfurt has to win its three remaining games to stay up in the basketball Bundesliga. It starts on Monday (3 p.m.) against the Würzburg Baskets.

Robertson in a Skyliners press release: “I know that this season hasn’t gone as hoped – so we have to mobilize everything again in the remaining three games on and off the court. Even if I can’t play an active role due to an injury, I’ll support as much as I can from the sidelines. Regardless of this season, I have decided together with my family that it is time to come home and be more with my wife and children again. I’ve also been struggling with a foot injury for some time and the doctors have advised me to retire – because I could have health problems for the rest of my life if I keep playing.”
It is his 14th season for Frankfurt. In 2009 the American came to the Main metropolis from the Auburn Tigers. Robertson is a rarity in the league, with players from overseas often only signing contracts for eight weeks.
At the end of January, Robertson replaced Frankfurt legend Pascal Roller as the club’s most successful point collector. “It’s great to be here for so long,” he said at the time.
Only Rickey Paulding (15 years in Oldenburg) was longer with a BBL club.
Robertson has played 479 Bundesliga games for Frankfurt so far, 741 steals are a league record. He played his most successful season in 2016: Victory in the Fiba Europe Cup, most valuable player in the final, appointment to the all-star team and best defender in the BBL.
After relegation in the previous season, Frankfurt started with an expensive wild card (700,000 euros). Now the next fiasco is imminent. The last home game of the season is against Würzburg, who are fighting for the playoffs.
Drama about the end of the legend’s career
Another wildcard is almost impossible because seven out of eight playoff teams from the 2nd division have applied for a BBL license.
Where the Skyliners will play next season is not yet clear.
On the other hand, one thing is clear: there will be a farewell game for Robertson. And his jersey with the number 23 will be pulled under the hall ceiling in Frankfurt and never given away again.
