Qualcomm releases Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1, special chipset for AR glasses

Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 is designed to power augmented reality (AR) glasses with a thinner design but more capable performance. Qualcomm collaborated with Microsoft in designing this chipset.

The Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 is expected to revolutionize the shape of AR glasses in the future, so that the size is not so thick and weighs the user down.

Technically, the size of the specific chipset for AR glasses is smaller than the chipset for smartphones. As an example, the Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 is half the size of a smartphone chipset. Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 is made with 4nm manufacturing.

The Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 has two chips. A larger chip is placed on the stem of the AR glasses, while another smaller chip is embedded in the frame of the glasses right in the middle between the left and right frames.

The split of the two chips is done to reduce the size of the chipset, so that the size of the AR glasses made later is not thick and large.

“Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 is built to deliver high processing capabilities and bring artificial intelligence (AI) into a more elegant device,” said Hugo Swart, VP of XR Product Management Qualcomm Technologies.

Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 is said to have 2.5X better AI performance with 50% more efficient power consumption. The chipset also supports Wi-Fi 7 technology for faster connections and lower latency.
