Quaker Oats Company Recalls Cereal and Protein Bars over Salmonella Contamination Suspicion

Jakarta

Quaker Oats Company withdrew a number of its cereal and protein bar products from the United States (US) market. This step was carried out on suspicion of Salmonella bacterial contamination.

As reported by USA Today, Saturday (13/1/2024), the company reported this information to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last Thursday.

The company has increased the number of recalls for its cereal products, granola bars and snacks. These products include Cap’n Crunch Cinnamon Crunch Cereal and Gatorade Protein Bars (Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor).

Previously, on December 15, the company also recalled a number of granola and cereal products, including Quaker Big Chewy Bars in various flavors and packaging variations, as well as Quaker Simply Granola cereal. The FDA said the products are sold in all 50 states, including Puerto Rico, Guam and Saipan.

“Consumers should discard and not eat these Quaker products,” the FDA said.

Following this move, Quaker Oats Canada also announced a recall of several dozen of these products. The company also said it is working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to remove the recalled products from store shelves.

In detail, other products that have also been withdrawn include Gamesa Marias Cereal, Cap’n Crunch Sea Berry Crunch Cereal, Cap’n Crunch Instant Oatmeal, Cap’n Crunch Treats Peanut Butter Crunch Cereal Bars, Gatorade Protein Bar Peanut Butter Chocolate , and Quaker Simply Granola Oats, Honey & Almonds Cereal.

In addition, several variety pack products, snack boxes with mixed varieties, and other snacks, including Quaker Oats Rice Crisps and Frito-Lay potato chips, were also recalled. Most products have an expiration date of 2024.

On the other hand, Quaker Oats itself has not explained in detail how this potential contamination occurred. But the company said there had been no confirmed reports of illnesses linked to the products.

The FDA explained that Salmonella itself is a bacteria that usually spreads in raw and undercooked food. However, these bacteria can enter the food production chain when the people involved do not wash their hands or fail to maintain cleanliness.

Salmonella causes about 1.35 million illnesses, 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths in the U.S. annually, according to estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC reports, Most people who contract salmonella experience symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps between six hours to six days after infection.
