Qantas stops all international flights until 2021

Jakarta

The airline from Australia, Qantas Airways will stop international travel until mid-2021. The decision was taken due to the ongoing losses that have reached AU $ 4 billion, which is equivalent to US $ 2.9 billion or Rp.42.63 trillion (exchange rate Rp.14,700 / US $).

In the June period, Qantas reported a profit before tax of AU $ 124 million (US $ 89 million), down 90.6% from a year earlier of AU $ 1.33 billion.

Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce said international routes would not reopen until the middle of next year and US services may depend on the COVID-19 vaccine available. Routes will be reopened in each country depending on the spread of the virus.

“New Zealand is a clear example that it has the potential to open up relatively quickly compared to other countries around the world. The US, with its prevalence there, will probably take some time. It may need a vaccine before we can see that happen,” Joyce said. 23/8/2020).

“We have the potential to see a vaccine in the middle or late next year and countries like the US may be the first to use the vaccine widely, so that could mean that the US is seen as a market by the end of 2021,” he added.

Joyce said this year was the toughest for the airline industry in the history of the last 100 years. But he claims Qantas is in a better financial position than other airlines to survive the pandemic.

“We believe (Qantas) is the lowest burning of money among any major airline group in the world,” he said.
