Qantas announces 6,000 job cuts in Australia

In Australia, the airline Qantas is responding to the coronavirus crisis with the dismissal of nearly 21% of its employees, or nearly 6,000 people. In addition, nearly 15,000 others will be laid off, especially those working for international flights.

By drastically reducing its workforce, Qantas hopes to raise 1.15 billion euros, or more than 137 billion CFP francs to finance its recovery plan. The company will thus lay off 6,000 people out of a total of 29,000 employees.
« The billions of dollars in revenue collapse does not allow us to maintain such a volume of jobs over time Said Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas Airlines. ” In addition to cutting 6,000 jobs, nearly 15,000 people will be laid off.
Today we don’t have a job for them, but we will have some in the future
“.

The hope of the national market, time for the international

Qantas is banking on a recovery in the national market. International traffic will wait. Nearly a hundred planes will therefore remain on the ground for a year. The six Boeing 747s will never take off again.
« We are optimistic for the national market. Within a year, it could regain up to 70% of the pre-Covid level, and then 100% the following year. The international market will take much longer Explains Allan Joyce.
Like many other airlines around the world, Qantas is experiencing a dramatic drop in demand for international flights.
Faced with the pandemic, many countries, such as Australia, have closed their borders. Reopenings are slow.
