Pyrenees: it immortalizes the passage of a meteorite over the Tourmalet

the essential
Eric Castaings immortalized in the night from Saturday to Sunday, at 12.54 am, a meteor crossing the sky above the Pyrenees.

“It was magic. A moment that you only live once in your life.” In a night full of stars, the Bigourdan photographer Eric Castaings, also known for his role within Météo Pyrénées, lit a few more in his eyes.

The night was already far advanced between Saturday and Sunday, on the heights of Tourmalet where Eric Castaings was posted to admire and immortalize the starry sky, in the heart of the international reserve dedicated to him at the foot of the Pic du Midi. “In the middle of a face-to-face photo session with the stars, a meteor pierces the sky above the Pyrenees” says the photographer who had invested the Pyrenean peaks for a few days (and a few nights) to capture its nocturnal beauties, after two months of confinement and a disturbed first week. It is 12:54 am when the meteorite prints on its memory card.

PYRENEAN LOOK
*** The documentary film ***

In this period of confinement and after a week of work, I offer you this documentary film which evokes the reasons which attract me to discover ever more extraordinary places in the Pyrenees.

“The victory is there too, beyond the end of the hike, beyond the effort made, in the promise kept by these images that I engrave in me the magic of an instant”

I thank all those who participated in the development of this film.

I hope that these few minutes of escape will make you forget the hard period we are going through.

An unusual and unforgettable celestial encounter at the cost of hours of waiting for this photographer in love with the Pyrenean landscapes, even if such phenomena are not so rare in the Bigourdan sky. It could be Comet Swan. Rarer is to manage to immortalize these furtive moments in its objective, a superb and unique shot!

A starry sky reserve

In the heart of the Pyrenees, the Pic du Midi RICE (for International Starry Sky Reserve) is the first of its kind to be labeled in Europe, with the aim of combating light pollution. An issue that is no longer just a question of stars, but also points to cultural, environmental and economic issues, by valuing and protecting the sky as a natural and cultural heritage. The RICE preserves the night through public education and the installation of responsible lighting, in a territory of 247 committed municipalities which spans two-thirds of the Hautes-Pyrénées.
