Putin’s Speech on Threats to the West and Nuclear Weapons: Response to Macron and Austin Comments

The third part of Putin’s speech was devoted to threats to the West, including the use of nuclear weapons. This was the Russian dictator’s response to Macron and Austin’s remarks.

“They are going to attack our territory and they are using the best possible forces. But we remember the fate of those who tried to invade our territory, and of course their fate will be far more tragic than anything we could face. They must understand that we too are weapons. Weapons that can defeat them on their own soil, and of course all of this is very dangerous because it could actually lead to the use of nuclear weapons. Don’t they understand that? These are people who have not had the hard experience. They are about it forgotten, but we have survived it, for example, in the Caucasus war and now in the Ukrainian conflict,” Putin said.

He advised Western politicians to remember the fate of historical figures such as Nazi German leader Adolf Hitler and French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who unsuccessfully attempted to invade Russia.

Putin also devoted an extended section of his speech to describing the combat readiness of Russia’s nuclear forces and emphasized that Russia’s new Sarmat nuclear missiles can reach any point on the globe.

According to Tatyana Stanovaya, a researcher at the “Carnegie Endowment for International Peace” think tank, if a year ago Putin focused on the defense of “our land” and relied on the rhetoric of defense and even sacrifice, then this year he sounded victorious, speaking not on behalf of a geopolitical victim, but as ” terrible and invincible power”. This change is explained by the Kremlin’s growing belief in Russia’s military advantages in the war with Ukraine, as well as the sense of weakness and fragmentation of the West.
