Putin makes Europe nervous, crisis predictions are becoming more real

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Russian President Vladimir Putin made another statement regarding Moscow’s gas supplies flowing to Europe. He predicts that the amount of gas flow to the Blue Continent will continue to decline.

On the sidelines of his visit to Iran, Putin said this decline would be due to the non-return of the turbine that was supposed to carry gas from Russia to Germany via the Nord Stream I pipeline. It is known that the turbine itself is still in Canada and is being held back by sanctions so it cannot return. .

“The amount of gas pumped through the Nord Stream pipeline to Germany will drop further from 60 million to about 30 million cubic meters per day, or about one-fifth of its capacity, if the turbines are not replaced soon,” Putin said. Al Jazeeraquoted Thursday (21/7/2022).

Putin’s remarks further increase pressure on the European Union (EU), which fears Russia could cut gas to wreak economic and political havoc in Europe next winter.

On Wednesday, an EU member, Germany, joined the vote on this cut. Berlin sees Russia’s statement about the turbine as just an excuse. It is known, this cut was also made by Moscow when Europe was showering it with sanctions and criticism for attacking Ukraine.

“I want to emphasize that according to our information, this is an excuse from the Russian side,” a spokesman for the German Economy Ministry told reporters.

The EU itself plans to outline a contingency plan to reduce gas demand in a few months. The EU also warned member states that with a cut in demand the region would be more resilient even if Moscow did cut its supply.

In addition, the Blue Continent alliance has also been looking for several alternative gas sources to replace Russian supplies. Some of these countries are Azerbaijan, Qatar, Australia, and the United States (US).
