“Putin Extends Term of Civil Service for Key Foreign Ministry Officials Beyond Age Limit”

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to extend the term of civil service for one year beyond the age limit for Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin, Foreign Ministry Director General Sergei Vyazalov and First Deputy Minister Vladimir Titov. The law on the possibility of raising the age limit for civil service to 70 years in key positions was signed by the head of state on November 4, 2022.

Sergei Vershinin is 68 years old, he has been working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1976, and has held the post of Deputy Minister since 2018. Sergey Vyazalov is 65 years old, he has been in the position of Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2015. Vladimir Titov is 64 years old, he became the first deputy minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2013 (in the system of the ministry – since 1980).

The age limit for civil service is 65 years. For some categories of civil servants (in particular, the category of “leaders”), it can be extended up to 70 years. An appropriate decision, with the consent of the civil servant himself, can be taken by the state body or official who appointed him to the position. This rule does not apply to civil servants who are appointed by the President of Russia.
