Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated judoka Inal Tasoev, who was awarded the gold medal of the World Championship after the international federation (IJF) admitted a referee’s mistake in the final bout.

“I am sincerely glad that the International Judo Federation has reviewed the results of the last World Championship and restored sports justice. You are deservedly recognized as the winner of these most prestigious competitions,” the congratulatory telegram says.

Tasoev on May 13 at a tournament in Doha was recognized as the loser in the final of the weight category over 100 kg to the three-time Olympic champion Teddy Riner from France. The match ended in extra time, when the winner is the one who scores a point first. However, the judges did not count the Russian counterattack, and after a few seconds Riner succeeded in winning the action.

On May 17, the IJF admitted that Tasoev did not become the world champion due to a judicial error, and on June 9 it became known that the Russian, along with Riner, was recognized as the champion.

In addition to the gold of the World Championship in Qatar, Tasoev has two bronzes of the world championships (2018, 2019, in the team), a victory at the European Championship (2021) and the European Games (2019, in the team).
