No smartphone, no laptop, no television, no internet. That also means: no WhatsApp, no Instagram, no streaming platforms, no Bundesliga. And that for a whole week! Reporter Sebastian Meinberg wants to try this radical digital detox self-experiment for PULS Reportage. What does that do to him? What are the challenges of everyday life without digital assistance? And: will he hold out?

THE AVERAGE SCREEN USAGE

How much time do people actually spend in front of their screens? In 2015, 18 to 29-year-olds used their smartphone alone for an average of more than four hours a day! We also asked you: Our PULS Reportage Instagram Community has an average screen time of four hours and 45 minutes. And with Meini it’s even a little bit more: he has almost five hours of average cell phone screen time per day.

WHICH DAILY CHALLENGES MUST MEINI MASTER?

In addition to the constant availability, the so-called Fear of Missing Out (short: FOMO) is a phenomenon that affects more and more people psychologically. The fear of missing something is permanently pushed by app features such as stories and notifications, because they suggest: Something interesting is happening that you absolutely mustn’t miss! Spoiler: Meinis Fomo is pretty big … And that’s not all it has to endure. Meini works normally during the self-experiment and has to convert his home office to analogue. On top of that, he gets a little challenge from the editorial team and is faced with the question: How do you actually get information without using a search engine? Not easy…

WHAT TO DO WITH ALL THE TIME SAVED?

Instead of scrolling on Instagram, bingeing series and watching the Bundesliga, Meini tries to learn to love the quiet. And notices: Not that uncomfortable at all. In all honesty: How often do we even give ourselves the opportunity to just think about it and not drive away boredom with a glance at the smartphone? Exactly, so give it a try!

Will Meini manage the self-experiment and really stay offline for seven days? Find out in the new PULS report!
