Pulmonologist Eva Van Braeckel fears heavier second wave: “Don’t let it become a war situation”

With the order to free more hospital beds for corona patients, the government is trying to anticipate the combination of regular care and the care for Covid-19 patients. Pulmonologist Eva Van Braeckel fears more problems than last time as the hospitals continue to be flooded. The healthcare staff are also having a hard time.<!– –>

Yesterday evening, the FPS Public Health decided that from Wednesday all Belgian hospitals should reserve 25 percent of their beds for corona patients. The 300 beds in intensive care that have now been reserved are almost all occupied, which is why we are switching from phase zero to phase 1A. A total of 500 beds in intensive care and 2,000 regular beds must be kept free for Covid-19 patients from tomorrow.

With the increased capacity, the intention is that normal care will be less compromised than in the first wave. “We see a clear upward trend, but moreover: we are not going to be able to stop all other care as with the first wave,” says lung specialist Eva Van Braeckel of UZ Gent to VRT NWS. “There is a lot of concern about the collateral damage, delayed interventions and treatments. We still notice some of this deferred care in 1 in 2 patient contacts. ”<!– –>

“Fear more problems than last time”

However, combining Covid care and non-Covid care will not be an easy task. “It is going to be a spreading position to cope with all of this,” warns Van Braeckel. “If the situation continues to get out of hand, that’s a concern. If the hospitals are flooded even more, we fear more problems than last time. It was not a war situation then, let us make sure that it is not the case now. ”

According to intensivist Geert Meyfroidt of UZ Leuven, it is not unlikely that ordinary care will lose quality anyway. Van Braeckel agrees: “There are only a limited number of people in a hospital to properly adapt to such problems. Retraining is possible, but that is not the same quality. ” (read more below the photo)

Healthcare workers sit on gums

Van Braeckel is concerned that the hospital staff are on her gums. “We see problems for nursing care, but also for doctors. We are all much less available than in the first wave, because we have to combine everything. ”

“The healthcare providers are there for every challenge, but the balance is much more shaky now. The people are tired, many more balls have to be kept in the air. We will also have to focus more on that. It is very important to work on solidarity again, on the feeling that we as a society are once again putting our shoulders to the wheel. ”
