Pulčín Rocks in Wallachia hide a natural gem, ice waterfalls

Pulčínské skály is the largest rock town in the Moravian part of the Carpathians. They are formed by rock walls, rocky sea, rubble and pseudo-karst phenomena. In winter, icicles form in the Ancona Canyon, which is also called the Fallen Castle.

“They are unique in their color with shades of yellow, orange to brown. This is due to the microscopic snow algae that lives in the ice, “said Zdeněk Urbanovská from the East Moravia Tourist Board. Ice falls form depending on the weather and usually reach their peak in February or early March.

The easiest are ice falls available from the settlement Pulčín, which is part of the village Francova Lhota. “An access road leads to Pulčín, where you turn off the road I / 57 on the outskirts of Lideček. In the center of Pulčín, there is a small, publicly accessible paid car park available for motorists, which often fills up quickly on weekends, ”Urbanovský pointed out.

The ice falls are located in a rare nature reserve, and these days the access field and forest paths are icy. Movement in mountainous winter terrain thus requires sturdy shoes.

“For more able tourists, we can recommend the yellow-marked tourist route leading to Pulčín from the Horní Lideč railway station. The eight-kilometer-long route offers interesting views of the countryside, and especially on weekends, people can avoid possible parking problems, ”said Urbanovský.
