Published a book on military and political events in Latvia during the War of Independence / Article

Continuing the series of publications started during the centenary celebrations of the State of Latvia and the Latvian National Archives, historians and archivists have published Part 3 of the book “Fight for Freedom: Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920) in Latvian State Historical Archive Documents”, Anita Čerpinska . The authors of the book are historians, doctors of history Ēriks Jēkabsons and Jānis Šiliņš, who are recognized in Latvia.

The new edition publishes and comments on 230 documents from the collection of the State Historical Archive of Latvia, which allows for a comprehensive acquaintance with military and political events in Latvia. War of Independence and track the process of nation-building.

The book is especially important because, for the first time, such a wide range of sources dedicated to the War of Independence was published together, introducing them not only into the scientific community, but also making them available to the public.

The book includes a description of the political and military situation at the time, a chronicle of events, an index of persons and a summary of the book in English.

The publication is dedicated to the victory of the Latvian army in the battles against the Bermontians in October-November 1919. It is a continuation of the first two collections of documents published in 2019, which looked at the course of the War of Independence from the end of 1918 to the middle of 1919.

The presentation of the book will take place remotely on May 22, 2021 at 14.00 and will be broadcast live to the Latvian National Archives Facebook.com page. Within the framework of the event, a discussion of historians will take place, which will be chaired by journalist Māris Zanders. The authors of the book Jānis Šiliņš and Ēriks Jēkabsons, as well as representatives of several Latvian museums will take part in the discussion: Juris Ciganovs (Latvian War Museum), Tālis Pumpuriņš (Cēsis History and Art Museum), Aldis Barševskis (Ģederts Elias Jelgava History and Art Museum) and Linda Rozent Rose (Liepaja Museum). The discussion will be dedicated to the events of Bermontia and the evidence of these events kept by Latvian memory institutions.
