This news should surprise many users of public transport in Frankfurt: Compared to other cities, the tickets for local transport in the Main metropolis are quite moderate.

Frankfurt – A price comparison for local public transport (ÖPNV) surely comes to a very surprising result for many Hessen: The people in Frankfurt pay moderate prices for tickets in local transport, as a study by the ADAC showed. Hesse’s largest city does very well in a comparison of major German cities, especially for single tickets and day tickets, while the costs for monthly tickets are high, the analysis shows.

According to this, tickets for a short distance in buses and trains at 1.50 euros in Frankfurt are among the cheapest – among the cities examined, they are only so cheap in Stuttgart and Bremen. In Berlin, Leipzig, Bonn and Cologne, however, short trips cost two euros, according to the automobile club.

Public transport in comparison: Where Frankfurt is cheapest

In general, Frankfurt is doing quite well in the comparison. According to ADAC, only Hamburg, Mannheim and Dresden undercut the tariff in the Main metropolis of 2.75 euros for single tickets. In Munich, however, adults paid the most for a trip at 3.40 euros. For day tickets, Frankfurt is even the cheapest at 5.35 euros. Frankfurt is even offering some tickets in the RMV transport association significantly cheaper than in 2019, according to the study.

The ADAC compared the public transport prices in 21 major German cities with more than 300,000 inhabitants and found that there is no uniform pricing. The ticket prices in public transport sometimes differ by more than 100 percent, explained the automobile club in Munich. “And that, although the services are mostly equivalent.”

Public transport: weekly tickets cost more in Frankfurt

The biggest price differences were discovered for weekly tickets: in Munich adults travel for 17.80 euros, in Berlin for 36 euros. Frankfurt was in the middle with EUR 26.80. If you want to take a bike with you on the bus and train, you don’t have to pay anything in the city on the Main – just like in Hamburg and Hanover. The Rhein-Ruhr transport association, which includes Düsseldorf, Essen and Dortmund, on the other hand, charges 3.60 euros for a two-wheeler. However, monthly tickets in Frankfurt are quite expensive at 93.10 euros – only Bonn, Cologne and Hamburg charge more for this card.

According to ADAC, the analysis shows that the cities “are still miles away from uniform public transport ticket prices,” emphasized the automobile club. “For the consumer and the attractiveness of local public transport as a whole, a standardization of prices at the lowest possible level would be desirable.” (Red / dpa)

There are big plans for Frankfurt Central Station. A tunnel should be the solution to the problem in long-distance traffic at Deutsche Bahn.
