Public Service Commission: A new DG for Health soon to be appointed

Change in the air on the 5th floor of the Emmanuel Anquetil building, in Port-Louis, before the end of the year. More precisely at the highest level of the Ministry of Health. With two retirements, first that of Dr M. Timol, followed shortly by Dr RK Domun, the current Director of Health Services, Dr Bhushan Ori, is well placed in the hierarchy to reach the highest post. Director General of Health Services, unless the Public Service Commission (PSC) decides otherwise. In any case, those familiar with the succession process when it comes to such a vacancy in a ministry are convinced that Dr. Ori, who is Director Health Services (DHS) since May 9, 2018, «is the next on the list to be appointed DGHS (Director General of Health Services)».

Dr Ori is married to Shamila Sonah-Ori, cousin of Kobita Jugnauth and avowed Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, who was to be appointed a member of the Electoral Supervisory Commission and the Electoral Boundaries Commission in 2018. This had sparked controversy and Dr Ori had defended himself from being a political nominee. In a statement to the express, he said he applied to the PSC for the position of DHS. “I was ranked right after the person named. She retired. I was next on the list ”, he argued then. He had pointed out that he is the only one with an MBA from a university in South Africa and even wrote a thesis on health in 2005. Holder of a postgraduate degree in emergency medicine, he was a SAMU doctor for ten years, a doctor for 25 years and a hospital director for seven years. However, other names for the post of DGHS are also circulating. On the side of the Ministry of Health, the reply is that the recruitment procedure is independent of the ministry and that the replacement for Dr Timol will be appointed by the PSC.
