PSG Announces Official Departure of Lionel Messi at End of 2022-2023 Season

KOMPAS.com – PSG have made an official statement that Lionel Messi will leave the club at the end of this season.

Paris Saint-Germain and Lionel Messi officially parted company after the 2022-2023 season ended.

Matchday 38 of Ligue 1, the top caste competition of the French League, season 2022-2023 between PSG vs Clermont, Sunday (4/6/2023) early morning WIB will present Messi’s farewell moment.

“The club would like to express its deepest gratitude to the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who also lifted the Trophee des Champions (French Super Cup), and two Ligue 1 titles with Les Rouge et Bleu,” PSG said in a statement on Saturday (3 /6/2023) before midnight WIB.

“Paris Saint-Germain is proud to have the greatest footballer of all time in the squad and with some emotion wishes Leo much more success for the rest of his career,” read a clip from PSG’s release.

Since strengthening PSG in 2021, Lionel Messi has appeared in 74 matches, not including the duel against Clermont in the final week of Ligue 1 2022-2023.

The Argentine striker, also known as La Pulga, scored a total of 32 goals plus 35 assists while serving for the club, the pride of the Paris public.

“I want to thank the club, the city of Paris and the people for these two years. I wish you all the best for the future,” Messi said, quoted from PSG’s official website.

In fact, the news about Messi’s separation from PSG has been widely heard since the press conference ahead of the match against Clermont.

PSG coach, Christophe Galtier, at that time said that the match against Clermont at the Parc des Princes Stadium would be the last for Messi.

However, the information then became confusing. Shortly after that statement, PSG told AFP that what Galtier said was wrong.

“Christophe Galtier was wrong when he said that the game against Clermont would be Messi’s last with PSG at the Parc des Princes,” PSG said in a statement a few days ago.

However, in the end what Galtier said was true. It is certain that Messi will not extend his contract with PSG, which expires on June 30, 2023.

“I want to thank Leo Messi for my two seasons in Paris. Watching the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner at PSG and the Parc des Princes, win back-to-back Ligue 1 titles, and inspire our young players, is a joy,” said Nasser Al-Khelaifi, President of Paris Saint-Germain.

“His contribution to Paris Saint-Germain and Ligue 1 cannot be underestimated and we wish Leo and his family all the best for the future,” Al-Khelaifi said in his farewell.
