PS5: Sony takes stock of the impact of the coronavirus, the release still scheduled for late 2020 – News

The COVID-19 pandemic is shaking up many projects, but the PS5 and the development of future games stamped with Sony seem – for the moment at least – to be spared. The Japanese manufacturer shared this morning its latest financial results, and took the opportunity to comment on the repercussions of the health crisis.

On the PS5, Sony says that several factors, such as forced telework for employees and restrictions on overseas travel, “presented challenges” regarding part of the testing process and the production lines. The firm assures however that “development is progressing towards a launch planned for the end of 2020”. She adds that at this point, “No major problem has arisen in the process of developing games from Sony studios or partner studios.”

On the PS4 side, there has been a “slight impact” on console production due to “problems in the component supply chain”, but Sony explains that short-term demand is being met with inventory current. In addition, the manufacturer is pleased with the “considerable increase” in sales of games for download and the number of subscribers to PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus. As of March 31, 2020, there were 41.5 million PS Plus subscribers (compared to 36.4 million in the same period last year), a record number since the launch of the service
