While the PS5 has the necessary components to expand storage space, it appears that the PS5 is disabled at startup and only activated later via a software update.

This was previously discussed by PlayStation hardware architect, Mark Cerny. He said the PS5’s ability to expand storage can be done via a solid state drive (SSD).
