PS5: A Sony conference too technical and unsuitable for the general public? – News

On March 18, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. (French time), Sony in the person of Mark Cerny held a conference on the PlayStation 5 and more specifically on certain technical specifications of the future console of the Japanese manufacturer. This event aroused the interest of the players who expected a lot, and the disappointment lived up to their expectations. Focused exclusively on the technical aspect, was the Sony conference unsuitable for the general public?

Let us first return to the origins of this conference which brought together hundreds of thousands of players from around the world. As an example, you were almost 20,000 simultaneously on LeStream to listen to the speech of the main architect of the PlayStation 5, words translated live by Lâm. Sony may have broadcast the entire conference on the Internet, but it was intended almost exclusively for developers. And for good reason, this speech was originally intended to take place during the Game Developer Conference or GDC (an event postponed to this summer) and not publicly. The topics covered by Mark Cerny and the manner in which they are presented are therefore not surprising. Players just weren’t the priority target of Sony.

PS5: A Sony conference too technical and unsuitable for the general public?

Why open the conference to the general public in this case you say? The answer is quite simple. This allowed Sony to face Microsoft and its Xbox Series X, as well as occupy the media space. A strategy that has paid off. The gaming world has been talking about the PlayStation 5 and this famous conference since yesterday evening, deemed too technical by the uninitiated… and rightly so. Interest and optimization of SSDs, backward compatibility issues, hardware design, reduction of parasitic sounds, detailed description of the architecture and of certain components of the machine… all presented using complex graphics and therefore necessarily difficult to understand for common players. The conference was aimed at certain professionals in the field without really worrying about the other puzzled and often disoriented spectators.

The disappointment was and remains palpable even today whether on jeuxvideo.com or on social networks. Some hoped to see the design of the PlayStation 5 and its new DualShock, better games or even a technical demonstration of the capabilities of the console, but it did not happen. In reality, all of this was predictable. In 2013, the same Mark Cerny held a similar and therefore 100% technical conference on the PlayStation 4 in front of a floor made up of professionals capable of capturing the entire presentation. By seeking to interest the general public, Sony should have popularized the speech in order to gain clarity and reach a novice audience, which was unfortunately not the case.

Not everything is to be thrown away, but mostly requires an expert to decipher the information disclosed and understand it. Sony has finally formalized the technical specifications of the PlayStation 5 and put an end to the debate surrounding the number of teraflops. CPU (processor), GPU (graphics card), memory, storage space… the manufacturer has lifted the veil on the components of the PS5 and has confirmed several major functionalities. This 9th generation console will support Ray Tracing and partial backward compatibility by being able to launch some of the most played games on PlayStation 4 … according to the words of Mark Cerny.

This first official conference on the PlayStation 5 is obviously only a step in Sony’s communication strategy. No doubt the Japanese company will unveil its home console during a presentation designed for players in the weeks or months to come. gamescom or Tokyo Game Show (if both are maintained), State of Play or PlayStation Experience, to name a few … PS5 fans just need to be patient. It will then be about design, price, features, catalog of games and launch date. In short, everything we have come to expect from an event intended for players and above all for players.

Too technical and unsuitable for the general public, the Sony “GDC” conference certainly was without being without interest. The information, sometimes cryptic, on the PS5 was numerous. The veil was lifted on the future of the PlayStation brand, not necessarily as fans hoped. However, the PlayStation 5 is now on track for an exit in late 2020 … without further details.
